Comparison of materials
Glass and acryl are materials with very different characteristics. But both have a right to exist.
Surface roughness of glass and acrylic compared
Glass eye prostheses show a much smoother surface than acrylic prostheses. Mechanical irritations of the conjunctiva are being reduced.
Wettability of glass and acryl compared
Glass is hydrophilic, while acrylic lenses are hydrophobic and let human fluid roll off their surface. Because there’s not much lubricating film between conjunctiva and acrylic prosthesis this tends to lead to more irritations.
